A well-rounded history.

Dense forests, fertile soils, the natural hydropower of the Brixentaler Ache – the Haslau site has always attracted workers. Smithies, mills and sawmills were established there as early as the 16th century. In 1878, our great-grandfather, Anton Thaler, the founder of the company you see today, acquired the Haslau Mill and Sawmill near Hopfgarten. With that, the seed of our company’s history was sown. And now, almost 150 years later, a modern medium-sized timber company has grown from it – and is in its sixth generation of family management. Like the spruce, fir and larch which we process, we have our roots in the region. We are deeply attached to our trees and the site. The beauty of the mountains, the cycle of nature and the forces of the Alps have left their mark on us too.

In 1878, our great-grandfather, Anton Thaler, the founder of the present-day company, acquired the Haslau Mill and Sawmill near Hopfgarten – together with farmland and an oil press.
His sons Anton, Josef, Theodor, Michael and Jakob took over the businesses in 1909 but focused their activities primarily on wood sawing, and built a further sawmill on the Mühlbach.
In 1954, Johann Neuschmied, Jakob Thaler’s son-in-law, took over as managing director.
Between 1969 and 1971, further investments were made: including the new construction of the sawing, log wood cross-cutting and sorting plant with fork-lift truck operation.
In 1985, the management passed to Hansjörg Neuschmied.
Between 1984 and 1988, more substantial investment was made in the site: there was the new sawmill construction, round timber debarking/measurement, and construction of a biomass heating system with drying chambers.
In 1995, a hydroelectric power station with a Kaplan turbine was built to supply energy.
In 2000, the machine fleet was extended by a Linck circular saw line with multi-deck sorting for a sawing capacity of 100,000 m³ of log wood per year.
In 2008, a new biomass heating system with a capacity of 5 megawatts was built.
Neuschmied continued to grow as a company, and so the planing lines were expanded and improved with a batten circular saw in 2010.
Full speed ahead with solar power: between 2018 and 2024, the photovoltaic installation was developed and expanded to a capacity of 1,100 kW.
In 2024, Iris Neuschmied was appointed as an additional managing director in the family business.
